When the weather gets cooler, football season starts, and everything tastes like pumpkin spice, it means FALL IS OFFICIALLY HERE
Everything about fall is nice, except for one thing: BUGS!
Colder weather brings bugs and rodents inside so it is very important to protect your home from bugs this fall.
Here’s an infographic from the Northern Neck Virginia Insurance on how to keep bugs out of your home during the fall.
1. Store firewood 20 feet away.
Removing hiding places for pests close to your house might lessen the likelihood that they will manage to get inside.
2, Have your roof inspected and repaired if needed
When installed and maintained properly, your roof is designed to stand up to mother nature, but small problems can quickly become big ones. Minor damage to your roof could not only let bugs in, it could also put you and your family and your home at risk. Damage to your roof can lead to expensive repairs or even a costly full replacement.
3. Secure and weather proof windows and doors
Insects don’t need a wide-open door to get into your house. Any insect looking for a warm place to spend the fall can see a small hole or crack in your siding as an easy way in. This is why it’s important to seal those openings, even ones you might not think of right away.
4. Remove overgrown vegetation and debris near your home
Some bugs need water in order to lay their eggs. While you might not have a wading pool, fountain, or pond, your yard might still have areas of stagnant water. After it rains, a muddy mess can form in a garden that has grown too big or in a patch of grass that isn’t cut. Also, a thick layer of built-up plant or leaf debris can stop a lawn from draining properly and make it a great place for bugs to live.
5. Ensure water drains away from your home
Excess water can lead to erosion and cracking in both the foundation of your home and in sidewalks, patios, driveways and retaining walls. These cracks make for great hidey-holes for bugs. Various drainage solutions and grading can help mitigate water damage before it becomes a problem.
